EVAlution Creative

DEADLINES —  DeadlineS are our enemies. Creativity takes time. If clients don’t give enough time to agencies they will only come up with first ideas. To prove this hypothesis to clients, this agency produced a film and sent it to clients.

How many times have I been asked to knock out a project “real quick”? Hundreds.

This is truly the most frustrating thing about my job. Clients/bosses want things now. They want to launch it or bill it — by the end of the month, the end of the week, the end of the day, before the meeting! Doing my best work takes time. I need to process the input, do some research, and percolate on it. Sleep on it. Noodle it.

As I look back through the awards I’ve won over the years, I can see that those rush projects rarely won. The most honored and most successful designs are the ones where I was allowed the time to really think things through and refine them to perfection.

Babies in the Bed (Taken with instagram)

Of course I'm Brandwashed, and you are too.

I got into advertising and branding because I’m fascinated by the psychology of it all. The effect of color on buying trends is particularly interesting, which is why I’m so intrigued by Pantone’s color trend reports.

::

Martin Lindstrom was on the Today Show this morning to promote his new book, Brandwashing: Tricks Companies Use to Manipulate Our Minds and Persuade Us to Buy.

::

The information is being touted as “a shocking behind-the-scenes account” so I’m pretty excited. I’ll need to buy the book instead of the Kindle version, so I can see the color portions. If only I had an iPad…sigh.

An Ever-Changing Worldwide Street Art Gallery at Your Fingertips

Crowdsourced street art photo

I LOVE THIS CONCEPT! A crowdsourced collaborative that’s going to create the largest street art collection in the world — one that you can view from your laptop or mobile device. How fun will it be to contribute from my own vacation destinations?! It’s searchable by geographic location and by artist. Thank you, Red Bull! It’s a little sad that there aren’t many entries in San Jose, but I know a local photographer who loves to explore our city with her camera in tow. I’m certain that she’ll be a leading contributor in no time at all.

Social Media: Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse

Made you look, right? What a creative way to get the public to read and think about emergency preparedness. It’s a real breath of fresh air from the CDC. Well done!

My Favorite Part of the PMS

No, not that PMS! I’m talking about the Pantone Matching System® — the  most widely used standardized color matching system for all kinds of designers, photographers and printers. They are the authority on color.

Leatrice Eiseman — Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute®  and head of the Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training — has my dream job. She has studied psychology, taught fashion and interior design, and is recognized worldwide as “America’s color guru.” She’s the person who gets to decide what we’ll be looking at, living with, and wearing five months from now.

And here it is — the best part — the Color Forecast for Fall 2011. Enjoy!

By the way, did you know that she also declared Honeysuckle as the Color of the Year for 2011? You can learn more about that here.
